Annemarie has more than 30 years of international business and banking experience across Asia, Africa and the Middle East with ANZ and then Standard Chartered Bank including being CEO and executive director of a large, publicly listed subsidiary and latterly a member of the Group Executive Committee. Annemarie has operated in and around boards for the past 15 years both in executive and non-executive capacities. Annemarie started her career as a barrister and solicitor in NZ and the UK before moving into banking. In addition to executive coaching, Annemarie has a portfolio of chair and non-executive board roles, is a business mentor and an accredited mediator. Annemarie is currently Chair of Merryck & Co. EMEA.
With a Masters and accredited as an executive coach by Ashridge Business School and Gallup-certified strengths coach, Annemarie takes a client-centred approach, adapting her style to her client’s needs. She has excellent listening skills and a talent for sensing meaning beyond the spoken words. She uses her engaged, yet calm, analytical, and empathic style combined with her business acumen to assist her clients to identify and focus upon the issues that are most important to them. She focuses on her clients’ strengths using these as a catalyst for change and personal development and has a passion for understanding the inter-personal dynamics that enable individuals and teams to achieve peak performance on a consistent and sustained basis. Annemarie specialises in coaching senior executives and senior managers at inflection points in their careers, particularly first time CEOs, executive committee members and/or board directors.
Her career culminated in being an EXCo member of Standard Chartered PLC, a FTSE30 company. Other roles included being CEO and Executive Director of a listed bank in Thailand where she led the integration of two banks to form one culturally cohesive, highly profitable organisation; CEO of the bank in the Philippines; and various retail, commercial and institutional banking roles across Europe, Africa and Asia. She has also led several global functions including corporate communications, investor relations, real estate, third party management, internal audit, security, business continuity and crisis management, with accountability for multi-billion annual budgets. During her career she specialised in transforming businesses and functions leading culturally diverse teams. Annemarie was also the executive sponsor of the company’s Diversity and Inclusion programme and Living with HIV education initiative. She is presently Chair of Cater Allen Private Bank and Remuneration Committee Chair and independent non-executive director on the boards of WHSmith PLC and Santander UK plc.
Annemarie sees herself as a global citizen with New Zealand roots. She is married with four children and enjoys a wide range of outdoor pursuits, in particular running, hiking, swimming, tennis and cycling.
